Back to Eden Twin Flame Review

Today, we will be talking about “Twin Flame”, the third single album release by the Australian traditional metal band Back to Eden. After two successful releases “Temptation” on May 2016 and “Devil in Disguise” on February 2017, the band kept on composing to bring us the most beautiful melodies from the 90’s heavy metal music.

HeavyMetalTshirts readers might recognize Back to Eden from Devil in Disguise review which was published not long ago. This two men project, started writing music as a passion and it turned into a semi-professional metal band in a very short time. Their talents in composing, ideas, potentials and the positive feedback from their fans were enough for them not to question the future of this journey. I suppose it was the same reason for the heavy metal legends such as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest and etc.. to go on what they have started with their first releases.

First of all, most of the musicians know that being a band is more difficult than writing, recording and releasing albums. In my opinion, staying together as a band and moving forward in harmony until you get to a certain level in music, is still a big challenge. However, this is one of the great examples of how much we owe to technology and internet, for making it possible for talented musicians like Edan and Aliz to reach us, along with thousands of listeners from all around the world.

Twin Flame is a Back to Eden classic for me. It has all the necessary elements of the 90’s heavy metal. They have taken the best parts of each band and combined them under the name of Back to Eden. The power, the vibe, the energy. The electric in their sound is like an invitation to their show to me. I am a huge fan of early Metallica, and Back to Eden’s sound reminds me of their performances. As far as I know, the band haven’t played any live shows yet. But believe me, their songs have huge potential for live performances and it would be a great pleasure to see them playing on a big stage.

The recording quality on Twin Flame is above standard indeed. This recording quality is not the best possible, but it’s good enough to deliver the message (the feeling). I can clearly see that the band is improving themselves in every aspect, and every new song has more of their own. The ideas, riffs, solos, and vocals sound so professional that the listeners might easily get confused about this band.

1 – Congratulations with your new release; Twin Flame! How was the feedback for your first release, and how do you feel yourselves about the Twin Flame?

Thank you. Overall, our first single was received favourably, but it was really just friends and people that stumbled across our music online that heard it. It’s been a bit of a learning curve (still learning) on how to get our music out there to a wider audience. It’s only starting to get some traction now. As a band collective though, it’s getting much easier. Myself and Aliz are totally comfortable as a songwriting duo, and Aliz’s vocals has gone from strength to strength with each release. Just when I think something might be vocally out of reach, ‘BAM’- he nails it! It never ceases to amaze me some of the stuff he does. I really am his biggest fan. We also had Singaporean guitar virtuoso Dhalif Ali join us with some additional lead work on Twin Flame. All his parts were done by correspondence, but you wouldn’t know it. His style just fit so well, as if he were part of the band. It really turned out great! I am so lucky to have had such amazing musicians involved in this project.

2 – Twin Flame is your third single album release. Why did you guys decide to release another single but not a full album?

Simply put, money was the issue…haha! After Temptation, the goal was always to work towards an EP; but being self-financed, this unfortunately had to be done in stages. We will be hitting the studio again in January to finish up recording. Expected release of the EP will be around March next year. It will feature all 3 singles, plus 2 brand new tracks ONLY available in physical/CD format. This has been almost 2 years in the making. Hope it’s worth the wait?!!

3 – Twin Flame has many similarities with your first release, Temptation. Can we consider Twin Flame as a good example of what we should expect from Back to Eden’s first full-length album release? (I am sure this day will come)

Yes and No. Whilst I do think we have our own ’style’, and don’t really want to stray too far from that, we do try to make each track uniquely different from the last. The first two singles were a deliberate attempt at doing something a bit heavier. Temptation was more ’straight-ahead’, whilst Devil in Disguise was a touch progressive (without falling into that category). Twin Flame to me, has more of a Hard Rock vibe going on. The songs we are currently working on are different again.

4 – Every band has both short and long term strategies. Can you tell us about your short and long term plans?

Short term: Keep writing, finish EP, play some shows. Long term: ???

5 – What were your motives for this release? What pushed you to make another song?

When I first started this project, it was only meant to be 1 song. I had never recorded/released anything in my life, and it was really just about getting that out of my system. So I contacted some guys in our local scene that I really wanted to work with, and we just did it! Then it was like ‘oh that was cool, lets do this again sometime’. Everyone was keen, so we did it again. Then I figured “whats the point of only doing two songs, when you’re just a few more away from an EP”? And it kept rolling on like that, just going with the flow. Now it’s “after the EP, lets play some shows”. Who knows where this will end.

6 – Guys, I am interested in your personal opinions. Do you think a band should be innovative with their style, genre and music like Metallica, or, they should never change their attitude and genre in music like Iron Maiden? Which way feels closer to your hearts? And why?

Thats a hard one. As an artist you should be free to experiment, but as a fan you want to hear a familiar sound. I think maybe the answer to that is to experiment within the parameters of what it is you do. In the case of Metallica, the ‘Black’ album was a good example of how to do that. I’m sure many of the old school will disagree with that statement, but I doubt many would regard it as the biggest pile of shit they have ever heard either?!! Maybe just not as good as ‘Justice’ or ‘Puppets’. The next few releases however (Load, Reload, St Anger) probably overstepped that boundary. Whilst it may have opened doors to new fans, it did tarnish the brand somewhat.

7 – I am sure there are some Back to Eden fans out there who are dying to see you live, do you have any plans about this?

Definitely, but for now we are more focused on wrapping up this EP. Once that’s complete, we will look at putting together the ‘live band’. Any takers???

8 – Do you have any expectations from music for now? If yes, what are they? If not, can we consider Back to Eden is making music just for the love of music?

No real expectations. I mean, it would be nice to make some money back from sales I guess- recording is expensive you know…haha! But yeah, it’s definitely for the love of it. If money was the main motivation here, we wouldn’t be playing this style of music. Actually, we probably wouldn’t be playing music- period! But we’re enjoying the ride, and whatever else this may bring.

9 – I can see that Back to Eden is too modest with everything that they do. There are so many people out there, who are trying to do inappropriate things to get more attention and popularity for their music/art. How do you feel about this? Do you find yourselves open-minded (musically)?

Firstly, I would like to know what inappropriate things I can do to get more popular…haha! Yeah, some of it is kinda annoying, but if that works for them, so be it. We just do what we do, our way. We are not really interested in what others are doing around us. Remember when you first started writing music of your own? You did it because it was a fun creative outlet right? Ok, so maybe a small part of you wished for fame, fortune and loose women; but you did it because you loved the music. I think when you choose to follow others and/or trends, you’ve already lost that special something that got you into music in the first place. Be yourself. Always. Not everybody is going to like what you do, but that’s ok. When your craft is honest and uncompromised, and people still decide to jump onboard, that right there is the ultimate reward!

10 – Lastly, what would you like to say to our readers?

Feel free to say hi to us if you want- we don’t mind! 2018 is going to be a cracker, hope to see you then! Cheers.
