Esprit D’Air – Constellations Album Review

Today, we will be talking about an industrial metal band from London, UK; ESPRIT D’AIR. Super professional production, photos, artworks, the look, and let’s see if they are at the same level with their music as well.

Esprit D’Air caught my attention with their professional look, as I mentioned earlier. Honestly, I am not familiar with this genre and the music from the Asian part of the world. The reason that I pointed out the band’s origins is that their cultural influence is on the every note in their music. Which is inevitable I presume. It is completely different than what Westerners usually do, and choose to do (musically). This difference is not something that someone planned or calculated, it is because of the cultural difference. Which is awesome. More than 70% of Metal Music is being played by Europeans and Americans. And in my opinion, this is one of the reasons for the situation in the metal music industry lately. The music is literally stuck, there is nothing new, nothing interesting and powerful like before. This is why the biggest metal music label Roadrunner Records signed a contract with three teenage girls from Japan, who are also known as Baby Metal. Do you think they are going to be the next big thing after Metallica, influence millions of people, change their lives, and rewrite the history of metal music? I don’t f***ing think so. It’s just an illusion, a balloon, nothing more.

Let’s begin with the recording quality on Constellations album. Well, this is one of the best metal music engineering that most of the bands with drop guitars prefer. I love this metal sound. It sounds excellent together and also gives the possibility for technical sided bands as well. If I am not mistaken, this djent sound and recording techniques were invented by Meshuggah and by their sound engineers. So it means that Esprit D’Air have the best possible sound for their music in Constellations album. Undoubtfully, the recording quality has a huge contribution to Esprit D’Air’s success.

Esprit Dair has remarkable guitar sounds both in clean and distortion. Drums sound deep and bold. Keyboard fills the background with beautiful pads and atmospheric sounds, and time to time comes forward with some melodies and even solos. They work great with guitars even when they are playing the same melody together. You can still hear the instruments separately. In addition, the vocalist has a very specific voice and singing style. You can easily say that they are not from the West by listening to him. Actually, there is nothing negative about it but only positive. The vocalist’s singing style makes them different than the others, and their music richer.

About the album; Constellations. Arrangements are different than the usual metal bands, who are at the same genre with them. The music sounds heavy and even thrashy time to time, especially on the instrumental sections. I mean the intros, pauses, bridges, outros, and connections. However, when the vocalist starts singing, the band have decided to keep everything more simple and maintain the focus on the vocal lines. This point where they start to be different from other bands. It wouldn’t be the best explanation to say that songs transform into an another genre with vocals. But every verse and chorus part have a different kind of construction (musically) indeed. Nothing bad, nothing wrong, just different. For instance, I noticed on almost every song, Esprit D’air is pushing the boundaries of heaviness in their music. With their melodies, tones, grooves, riffs, and tempos. And I admit that they do it remarkable, especially on the intro part of the song; Rebirth (watch the video below). Exceptional introduction, brutal guitar riffs. But when it comes to the verse or the chorus part, there they show their unique side which doesn’t sound like something that our ears got used to hearing before.

On the other hand, Esprit D’Air also offers some electronic elements in their music as well. This is something that I am personally against, but I also respect for those who prefer doing it. In my opinion, it kills all the natural vibe in this beautiful combination of rock and metal music instruments. Bands like Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and Evanescence have experimented and tried new techniques in their music. And they have proved the fact that if you are good in what you are doing, metal music fans will be open to new ideas as long as they respect what you do. Besides, there are so many cuts and editings on natural sounds in Constellations, this is obvious. I mean, they are somewhere between Meshuggah and Linkin Park. Not a bad niche if you look at it from the bigger picture, to be honest. Isn’t it what metal music labels are looking for lately; a hard-working band who also have a unique sound, look and a style in a unique genre?

In general, Esprit D’air have something positive and also interesting about them. In my book, they are doing everything right. And thus, they have a brand value. They have their own unique style in their music as I explained before. Good arrangements, excellent musicianship, and songwriting skills. It is obvious that these gentlemen have high potentials and a specific taste in music. I really liked some ideas in their couple songs. Riffs are strong, fresh melodies, remarkable guitar solos and most importantly, they have their name musically stamped on every Esprit D’Air song, which is admirable.

Eventually, Esprit D’Air is a rising star. They have couple releases since 2012, but If I am not mistaken, Constellations is their first full-length album release. Believe me this matters. We, as Metalhead Community, wish them good luck in their careers and would like to hear more from this band in future. You can find some useful links about Esprit D’Air below. Thanks for reading!
