Help Japanese Metal Band Edge of Blacksmiths Win the War Against Jpop

When you think of Japanese music, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? An army of scantily clad Japanese girls dancing in unison? Perhaps it’s over autotuned boybands or traditional enka music from days long gone by? Whatever your image is, the truth is that Japan has had a long relationship with metal music. Japanese bands like X Japan and Galneryus still hold the power to fill arenas full of screaming fans and headbangers alike. Independent metal band Edge of Blacksmiths hopes to follow in their footsteps and show the world Japan has a lot more to offer than just Jpop.

Edge of Blacksmiths formed in February of 2016 and immediately was drawn to their current modern metal style. Lead singer Pierre explains, “After we got our members together, metal music was clearly the best fit for our team. We all come from diverse backgrounds musically and it was the one style we were all interested in.”

Primarily focused on touring and continuing to refine their sound, the band is aware of the difficulties of working as an independent artist in 2017. “For better or worse, you can see and hear everything on the internet,” says lead guitarist Tack. “Especially in Japan, fans don’t turn out to catch a live show anymore.”

He continues, “It’s hard to be a straight metal act, so we are experimenting with metalcore and hard rock. We are hoping to come up with something interesting!”

Their first EP “Resign to our Fate” has drawn favorable reviews and comparisons to other metal bands such as Melo Death and Blood Stain Child. Title track “Resign to our Fate” is a symphonic metalcore track that demands to be listened to again and again. Aggressive and unrelenting, “For the Innocence” is worthy of a spot on every modern metal playlist. “Remnant of the War” is the EP’s stand out track that exemplifies the bands contemporary sound tweaked with accents of Japanese metal styling.

The music video for “Remnant of the War” continues this hybrid of styles by bringing Eastern and Western horror together in an exquisite mash up. The video, produced by Tokyo based Tokyo Cowboys and directed by Raito Nishizaka, is both musically and visually a solid introduction to the band’s style. For fans of the horror genre, the predominantly female cast featuring Stefanie Joosten of Metal Gear Solid fame, swimsuit idol Haku Inko, and Youtuber Natalia Natchan provide enough eye candy to keep you watching until the twist ending.

Moving forward, the band hopes to expand their fan base overseas while continuing to make new music and touring around Japan. “There are so many different types of metal music so it’s hard to appeal to everyone,” says Pierre. “However Japanese music really strives to be catchy. It tends to be simple, straight forward, and easy to listen to.”
Look for a new EP from the band in winter of 2017.
