Mavara Consciousness Album Review

This week, we are going to highlight a heroic progressive band from Iran; Mavara. They have just released their fourth studio album Consciousness. We will be talking about the band, about their style, their mission, sound and revealing Consciousness’ secrets for the progressive rock listeners.

Mavara Consciousness Album Review

First of all, I want to say that I am glad to hear that this band is originally from Iran. Believe it or not but the contribution from every part of the world makes music better, richer and more competitive. Mavara has titled as the first progressive rock band from their country, Iran, which is very meaningful and important for both Iranians and the rest of the world.

Mavara’s latest release “Consciousness” reminded me of some Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Pink Floyd and Dream Theater albums (especially Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence). Mavara doesn’t offer super technical music like Dream Theater. The focus is different. With their atmospheric songs, they sound more like Riverside-ish time to time. We can also say that they have a good combination of all these progressive rock heroes that I mentioned above. The biggest difference of Mavara from these bands, in my opinion, is that Mavara’s music is more based on overall music and sound more than the individual contribution. They do not highlight guitars or any other instrument in music like Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree do for example.

The recording quality sounds unusual to me, to be honest. I think this is not the best version of their sound in this album, it might have been much better. The balance is good enough for listeners to hear every single instrument good and clear. However, the guitars are weaker and the vocals are louder than they should be. I don’t know anything about the studio where they recorded this album, it is more like a very raw sound. This also might be their own decision too of course. The overall sound is not bad, but in my humble opinion, this recording quality doesn’t meet the requirements of any progressive rock band’s expectations. Especially in this genre, it is more important than the other rock and metal bands.

Mavara’s music style is not easy to describe. I call them somewhere between Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree. More progressive than Pink Floyd and less technical oriented than Porcupine Tree. They have the right place to grow their own name in Progressive Rock scene. On the other hand, they are still improving themselves and developing the ultimate Mavara sound. I mean, they are still below their potentials. The songs are generally long and like tales. Every song has a different story but also connected all together. Consciousness is more like a concept album actually, and needs to be listened from the beginning to the end. Easy listening, good atmosphere and always a great pleasure to listen to a new progressive rock release from good musicians such as Mavara.

I can easily say that Consciousness is a good album which will make progressive rock listeners happy, and give hope to not only Middle Easterners but all the rest of the world. Mavara is pioneering an extremely important mission here and we are all bound to show our support and gratitude for them. I wish them good luck on their journey and can’t wait to hear more from this band in future! Thanks for reading.
