This week, we are going to highlight a bright young man; Nick Magrene, a 16 years old guitarist from Massapequa, NY, USA. Apparently, Nick’s love of guitar and music has changed his life, and we will definitely support him in his journey of pursuing the ultimate dream in life.
Every day, an another talent rises from the other side of the world, and we are lucky enough to get to know, watch and listen to their work of art. It is still not clear to me if life is getting easier or the other way around by the latest technological developments and gadgets. One thing that I can say from my experience is that it got enormously complicated. We are surrounded by unlimited resources and opportunities where people weren’t even able to imagine even to desire, back in time. However, can we honestly say that now we have better, in other words, much more talented musicians, guitarists, architects, painters or writers than before? Well, we still don’t have “The Next Big Thing” in metal music after Metallica, don’t we? Or who’ll take the flag from game changer artists, inventors of guitar music such as Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Andy Timmons, Joe Satriani, or Paul Gilbert? Maybe someone will, but the question is, is musicianship going to be enough for them to reach their rightful listeners, or from now on, every musician needs to be a social media/youtube geek as well, to become an artist? (An artist, who can make a living by his art)
When I was younger, I had the talent, the skill and the drive to be a successful guitarist. However, as in every field, all these factors are not enough to bring you there, without determination, discipline, and devotion. Now when I look back, I can clearly see what was lacking in me. This young gentleman, Nick Magrene, reminds me of those days of mine. He is definitely talented and has the right last name to be a great guitar player, an artist. While I was watching his videos and listening to his music, the first thing that I noticed was his love for what he is doing. The love, the passion that brought him here today, the day of his single song release; “Green Inferno.”
To begin with, I want to make this clear; I believe in Nick because I don’t see any single negativity about him. As a guitarist, he has proper technique, ear, and fundamentals such as; understanding of music that he can build everything on. He is technically good on his instrument, and mentally in the right state; “Not being afraid to try and make mistakes.” You might have heard the quote by the legendary basketball player Michael Jordan; “I have failed over, and over, and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed. Just like Nick Magrene. He has recorded some videos, played on some shows and now writing his songs. And we all know that on a journey, the direction is more important than the speed.
Nick Magrene’s first official track; “Green Inferno” shows great potential and worth checking out. High energy in melodies, shreds, and drop tune guitar riffs. I liked his progressive composition, the movement in guitar parts, the way they change roles.
The song starts with a melody like an 8-bit video game soundtrack. We all know how technically challenging these tracks are. This is one of them. It definitely has a performance track feel in it. Just like Steve Vai does in his shows. Then we have the main solo part which changes the song and connects it with the second, also the ending part of the song in a satisfying manner. This experimental song shows potential in both, composing/songwriting and his guitar skills. It is crystal clear that Nick has done his job well and everyone around him already respects him for this. We wish the best of luck and continued success for our young friend Nick, and looking forward to listening to his upcoming album!
1 – Who is Nick Magrene? How old are you? Where do you live? How do you spend your days? Tell us about you.
Hey!, I’m a 16-year-old guitarist from Massapequa, NY. I play instrumental metal/shred. I am actually releasing a full album called “Electric Warrior” very soon! I spend most of my time listening to metal and practicing guitar.
2 – When did you start playing guitar? And what pushed you to it?
I started playing pretty young, around 5 or 6 years old. I wanted to start playing because whenever I heard a ripping guitar solo, I thought it was the coolest thing! and wanted to be able to do that.
3 – Who are your favorite bands and artists? and Which albums?
There are way too many to name! but some of my absolute favorites are Megadeth, Pantera, Korn, Death, and System of a Down. Rust In Peace by Megadeth really got me into the shred style of playing, that album is PACKED with awesome solos!. Symbolic by Death, Arise by Sepultura, and Continuum by Prototype are more albums are really loved!
4 – Who are Nick Magrene’s favorite guitarists? and Who are your biggest influences?
My favorite guitarists are Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Daron Malakian, Andy Larocque… The list goes on and on, but these are the most influential in my playing style and music.
5 – Where would you like to see yourself in life, in 10 years?
I would like to be playing with a band. I would really like to be playing technical groove metal with a great singer, a powerful drummer and a skilled bassist. But until the future, i can’t really predict where I’ll be.
6 – When did you start writing, composing music? and how do you feel yourself about it?
I started writing at 12, I liked writing thrash and punk riffs but I never really wrote more technical stuff until later on. I always feel there is room to improve my music and strive to make more killer compositions all the time!
7 – How does it feel like having your own song and music? Tell us about the process, when did you decide? when did you start writing and composing?
It’s pretty underwhelming, haha. It always feels so satisfying writing a part that just “works”. I consider myself a perfectionist when writing, if the riff/solo could be better I will always try to push my limits.
8 – Every music fan has his/her own reason to like that particular genre. What about you, why metal? How did you start listening to metal? And what did you like about it?
Metal just had a feel to it that no other genre did, I loved the raw energy in metal, the feeling of the bass punching me in the chest, the meaningful lyrics, and the amazing solos I would hear! I started listening to metal at 8, the first bands I got into were SOAD and Metallica, Slayer was also a big band for me.
9 – What do you plan to achieve next in life as a successful guitarist? Tell us about your future plans.
I plan to release my album soon and I am looking forward to it very much. I plan to tour during the summer to spread the word of the release. Hopefully, all will go well.
10 – Which bands would you like to tour the world with, if you were asked to choose? And why?
It would be awesome to tour with Megadeth, Slayer, Tool, Metallica, and also newer bands such as Whitechapel and Rings of Saturn!
11 – Tell us about your non-metal interests, and do you also listen to other genres?
I used to listen to a lot of 90’s pop punk such as Blink 182 and The Offspring. I’m actually currently quite a fan of Vaporwave and classical music such as Paganini and Bach.
12 – What’s the best concert you’ve ever attended that you did not play?
The best concert I ever saw was Slayer at Mayhem Fest back in 2015, The opening bands were really good too (most of them at least)
13 – Lastly, what would you like to say to our readers?
