OBIYMY DOSCHU Kryla Song Review

This week, we are bringing you a band which will make all the progressive rock fans happy; Obiymy Doschu, from Ukraine. The band has released their debut album “Elegiya” on November 17th, 2009. More than 10 musicians worked on their project and the album was mixed by an important name in this field; Bruce Soord of the Pineapple Thief fame, who also worked with some legendary progressive/technical rock bands such as Opeth, Anathema, Katatonia, Tesseract, and Blackfield (Steven Wilson’s project) before. And they will be releasing their second album; “Son” on November 17th, 2017.

First of all, it is great to hear a successful release from a new band from my fellow Ukraine. I always believed and said that there are so many talented musicians and bands in Ukraine, who have never had the chance to carry their names to both European and International music scene. Despite all these, this disappointing picture is changing and giving hope to thousands of people from Ukraine, thanks to pioneer bands and their successful releases just like Obiymy Doschu’s release “Elegiya”.

Obiymy Doschu’s first single “Kryla” has definitely more than we, progressive rock lovers can expect from a song. It has this storytelling construction just like Opeth and Pink Floyd did before. This kind of projects need a lot of attention and the band obviously worked so hard to make everything perfect. It won’t be wrong to call these guys as perfectionists, after this successful production that they have worked for eight long years.

The recording quality in Kryla is satisfactory. It has a very light and easy listening sound, which makes its range of reach wider indeed. Besides, this sound reminded me of the latest Opeth albums. It is not only guitar or vocal oriented, the focus is more like on the overall sound. I loved the progression and the ideas on the arrangement of Kryla. It sounds fresh, new and intelligent. Instruments also have a good balance except for one thing. I personally expected guitars to be a little bit higher, but I respect their decisions. Also, I am not a pro on mixing/mastering, but they have created a very good sound despite all these instruments on this complicated arrangement.

As I also mentioned above, there are so many fresh ideas in “Kryla”. There are some very successful connections that they have created with acoustic guitars. The overall Obiymy Doschu sound has a positive atmosphere and the vocalist has a good, relaxing voice for the job. The mood in Kryla makes you think, keeps your attention alive and most importantly, makes you wanna close your eyes and dream about something.

Ultimately, listening to the song “Kryla” once was enough for me to listen to their other songs as well. They have a bright future and we, as Metalhead Community Team, wish Obiymy Doschu good luck, hope seeing them live and hearing more from them in future! Thanks for reading.
