Today we are featuring a legend; BEHEMOTH, from POLAND. We have reviewed their latest full length album; I Loved You at Your Darkest, along with its character, style, story, potential and more.

There are some insanely dark and twisted turns in Behemoth’s new studio album “I Loved You at Your Darkest” (2018, blackened death metal). Retaining a lot of the core sounds that makes Behemoth, Behemoth, Nergal definitely attempts to play around a lot more than what we might expect from him.
Lyrically and vocally the album is very moody and almost hyper-theatrical. I’m not really a fan of the children “choir” that they used. When Ghost used children singing on the opening of their album this year it was cool, because that’s something you might expect Ghost to do, and it was awesome the way it creeped me out. But I don’t really feel that way about the way Behemoth did it in “Solve” and “God = Dog” and “Havohej Pantocratot” – but I can fully understand the reasoning and the religious vibe they wanted to create, which is Behemoth as fuck.
Besides that minor downside for me, the opening half of the album is very powerful and extremely well done in the way they cultivate a landscape of different musical textures, from the classic black and death metal to more melodic metal (“Ecclesia Diabolica Catholica”) and even hints of folk and avant-garde.

I think the band took a very different approach at the music than how they would have in the past as it’s a lot less outright blackened death metal and more experimental (“Sabbath Mater”), and it actually does a lot for me in creativity these really unique and catchy riffs in songs like “God = Dog” and “Wolves oh Siberia “ where the said riffs are stocky, broard, and static at times.
The drums in a lot of the songs were extremely catchy for me. There’s a huge degree of simplicity especially in songs like “Bartzabel” but it’s still just insanely cool.
Nergal said himself that he ran his creative mind dry when writing “The Satanist” (2014) which is understandable because it was a stellar record. So the fact that he could still deliver something like this (although definitely not on par, and obviously with a significant gap in time between the two) just proves his worth beyond what we already knew.
A very notable aspect of this album is Nergal’s vocal performance, as despite the vocal wear that one might expect from someone like him, he’s proven more than capable especially when hitting the numerous highs across the album while also harnessing some very dark and full vocals tones.

All in all this album is fantastic. It took a lot longer to write this review than it normally does because to be honest there’s a lot of depth to this album and I hope that people realize that before they automatically start bashing the band (although I’m not actually sure what the critical reception of this album has been so far). So, Hail Satan and Hail Behemoth.
