Deicide – Overtures of Blasphemy Album Review

Say what you want about Deicide and their music, they are a death metal powerhouse and their first release in five years “Overtures of Blasphemy” (2018) cements them solidly as one of the best death metal bands around at the moment.

Deicide – Overtures of Blasphemy Album Review

Layered with aggressive and doom-sounding sounding riffs with evil tremolo melodies on top, the band portrays the themes behind their anti-Christian agenda perfectly. And I love them for it. The solos and leads are really outstanding on this album. What the band crafts perfectly is keeping the main themes afloat during the solos. Where other bands might pull back to allow the shift of focus, the drums, bass and rhythm guitars are as evident during the solo sections as the solo guitar itself. I found the solos to be quite reminiscent of melodeath, not entirely – but there are definitely some similar aspects – maybe more so in “Flesh, Power, Dominion” and “Destined to Blasphemy.” Nonetheless, the solos are very very clean and technical. Production wise, I think this album holds an extremely high standard. Everything is perfectly balanced and extremely crisp, and you can see that a stellar effort was put into pre and post-production.

The pace doesn’t slow at any point in the album. At the halfway point I was sort of expecting them to maybe start exploring some different elements and possibly slow things down, but they didn’t and I loved it. Upon my first listen, when the album finished and started replaying I didn’t even notice, like it’s a continuous loop of evil. Glen’s voice is harsh and aggressive as ever, while still managing to maintain the clarity in his lyrical deliver. Lyrically the songs aren’t “edgy” in the anti-Christian themes, as there’s quite a lot of depth to the words and they’re extremely well written. I mean it put a smile on my face, having an old school death metal band remain true to their roots in terms of their anti-theistic beliefs. Steve Asheim is fucking so on point. Honestly his drumming on this album blew me away. Not quite as fast as on other albums, although it wasn’t called for this time, it’s still insanely heavy. His fills really stood out, as did his blast beats and double bass (“Excommunicated”). Kevin and Mark, still being relatively new members, handle the guitar duties perfectly and there’s not much more that you could ask for from them. The palm muting and tremolos are utilized effectively to give an aggressive and more brutal tone, which made it really hard to choose a favourite riff.

Overall, in my opinion the band absolutely killed it in every department – artwork, track listing, lyrics, instrumentation, everything. The album is definitely high on my list in contention for album of the year.
