The Canadian hard rock band Freudz Couch is a band with a long history, that some Canadian rockers might remember the name. They were formed back in 1992, and since then they have toured through out the country, released three indie albums, multiple EP’s and singles until 2003. After being separated from their active musical careers and their fans for 15 long years, they have regained their strength back and reformed in 2016. The reunited Freudz Couch went right back into the studio and recorded their latest EP album, EGO, which includes 5 new songs along with a legendary Phil Collins cover; “I Don’t Care Anymore”. Check out our exclusive interview with Freudz Couch below to find out the story behind their new EP; EGO, their absence, and their future plans.

The Interview

1 – Congratulations with your latest release; “EGO”. How is the feedback so far? And how do you feel yourselves about the outcome of this EP?

Thank you. The feedback has been surprising in that this EP in less than a year has been heard in places around the world we never could have imagined pre social media era, which is when we were active and pursuing the dream so to speak. Musically we surprised ourselves with the outcome of the songs simply because we were able to still write together after being away from each other for so many years, so the songs themselves overall, although not perfect in some aspects, looking back we possibly could have done some things differently, but happy with the end result.

2 – What were the reasons of this “big break” in Freudz Couch’s career? What changed since then?

We were simply tired is the easiest way to put it, things getting stale, we weren’t getting the big record deal we aspired to, we paid off our recording debts of the previous releases and we were getting older. Marriages, marriage break up, kids coming into play, was just getting to the point where real life was taking over. We started to live in different cities, and it just ended. One of the guys basically said I can’t do this anymore, so as a band we all just went away. Couple continued with different projects, couple just gave it up completely and there was truly never any intent or interest to ever get together again, especially to write new material. That is likely why it took 13 years before the though even came up again more by chance than anything else.

3 – Tell us about the recording process, what was the biggest challenge about it?

The recording process was heaven because it brought us back to the recording process we were familiar with, that being in an actual studio. With technology now you can easily record an album off your phone but getting back into it for us, being older, reliving that studio experience was key. The challenge was the pressure each individual put on himself in the studio to get it right, because your playing to click tracks, you’ve got a producer and others watching you so when your so far removed from that environment it got a bit nerve racking at times.

4 – How was the experience in working with an important producer and sound engineer Nick Blagona this time?

Nick is one of the best in the industry, a fascinating history working with most of the major acts in the history of rock n roll and just a genuinely nice and great guy. And a tough guy in the studio too who expected a lot but helped us along the way. We were familiar with Nick and worked with him on two of our previous albums where he put the finishing touches with the mastering. It was 15 years since he mastered our last recording and we weren’t sure if he would remember us. When we knew we were going to record again, he was our first thought to work with so we reached out to him and he graciously offered to record and produced the whole project if we went to him and his Psychotropic Studios and Grant Avenue studios in Hamilton, which we did. He was struggling with some health issues at the time but it was amazing to see him push through that and focus on the work at hand working with us. It was just an amazing experience, learnt some new things, listened to some great stories in down times as well about some of the legends in the industry who we grew up admiring from Deep Purple, to April Wine, James Brown, Cat Stevens just to name a few, all of which he worked with.

5 – How did you guys come up with a cover song idea? Why Phil Collins? Who were the other candidates? Can you tell us about the selecting process a little bit?

That is a long story and a bit complex but will try to make sense of it. The idea came about after the band broke up around 2003. Our drummer is a big Phil Collins fan, and he never had the opportunity to play a Phil Collins song or Genesis song live. We played a lot of covers along with our originals in live shows but nothing that a Phil Collins or Genesis song would fit in with, we’d be considered more on the heavier side. So after we broke up and gone our separate ways our drummer reached out and asked for a favour, basically to record the Phil Collins song, more for his personal dream so to speak cause he does listen to Phil Collins or Genesis non stop. He got permission from Phil’s Manager Tony Smith to record it, so we did, however, we changed the lyrics. Well, Phil and his Manager weren’t happy about us changing the lyrics and let us know about it. So we let it die with the death of the band at the time. Fast forward 13 years later when we decide to write some new songs, and the masters of the Phil Collins song still exist. So we listen to it after 13 years, even though there have since been a couple of other bands do covers of it, and we think it has potential with the changed lyrics. So we write Tony Smith again for permission with the changed lyrics with so much time passed and once again he gives us permission to record the song, but with the original lyrics only because that is the way Phil wants it. So after some debate within the band, we finally re-record the original lyrics, add some additional drumming to to the original tracks as well as some additional guitaring, and we felt comfortable enough to put it on the new EP as we felt it had more of an authentic take to the original track than the other versions we heard. That is not a slight to the other versions we heard as they are great, ours just seemed more of an homage to the original version with a live feel from our view point, but who knows really. Phil may hate it, we just don’t know at this point. The end result of this song has about 50 different recorded tracks on it and took 13 years from beginning to end in the recording process.

6 – What differences do you see when you compare Freudz Couch’s latest album with the previous ones? And how do you describe the direction of your music?

Truthfully for better or worse not a lot of difference from the previous material in the overall sound, however the songs now have more continuity to them which has a lot to do with the producing of Nick Blagona. Our earlier music had a lot of time changes, sometime 2 or 3 within one song, these newer songs generally stay withing the time signature and are shorter. A lot of our older songs ranged between 5-10 minutes in length.

7 – How do you guys describe “EGO” album? What can you tell us about Freudz Couch’s sound and lyrics in this album? What is the story behind it?

The EP evolved where the cover of the album ended up representing each one of the songs on the EP. If you look closely, each of the titles of the song can be found represented on the cover which started off as an idea from our guitar player Don to incorporate Sigmund Freud somehow on the album cover. The thought was sexy half naked girl with Freud counselling her. Overall the EP lyrically is pretty dark. Although the experience as a band getting back together after so long and writing and recording again has been fun, personally for many of the members has been a dark time and is reflected lyrically and musically where overall the EP has a darker, angrier tone to it. Don’t think that was done intentionally, but as time went on from the initial writing sessions to the recording part, lyrics evolved and changed until the final product which has an overall darker tone to it, for better or worse we are not quite sure yet but some of the songs are gaining some traction.

8 – Who were FREUDZ COUCH’s musical influences lately, Which artists, bands and albums?

Our influences are all over the place between each member. We are not a band where we all have the same background witih musical tastes. But this is a mix of where the influences come from as the range from Deep Purple, Led Zeppellin, Genesis, Elvis Costello, Elvis, The Beatles to extremely hardcore heavy music. So there is just a lot we like as individuals, our bass player has had side projects in country music and a big country fan so it’s all mixed into what the final product of the Freudz Couch Music. To us its a benefit, to some in the music industry it’s been a hinderance for us because if you listen to our new EP our our full previous albums, there is a lot of variety from song to song. So some have had a hard time figuring us out but to us its all just rock n roll. We do what comes out of us and never held back, if it flowed out, it was worth pursuing.

9 – Tell us about the band’s future plans, tours, shows, releases or side projects?

Our guitarist and bassist have side projects to look out for and have never given up on their passion for music and writing original music. As for Freudz Couch, we are building a larger and larger base through social media but the focus now is at some point putting together a rather unique concept album. However life for some of us has taken over again and doing it on an indie level at this point has some challenges, so day by day is the way we are looking at things. You will likely see new releases through social media before live shows if we are being honest.
