KONGOS Real Life Song Review

The KONGOS are an alternative rock band made up of four brothers originally hailing from South Africa. They now spend most of their time in America where they compose, record, and preform most of their music. The KONGOS still remain true to their South African roots, as is evident in most of their songs that rely heavily on rhythm and upbeat tempos. KONGOS aren’t the only South Africa band to take up residence in America, as at the turn of the century the South African post-grunge band Saron Gas uprooted and moved to America to restart their band under the name Seether. The KONGOS released a new single a few days ago called “Real Life.” I instantly fell in love with this song, particularly because the KONGOS were one of the first “rock” bands I ever listened to.

I first found out about the release of the single through the post that Daniel (guitars & vocals) made on Instagram explain the meaning behind the new song, what inspired him to write it, and the process of recording the song. I instantly went and listened to the song, and it blew my mind instantly from the first few seconds of the solo percussion, to the introduction of the vocals and the keyboards. The song structure is seemingly simplistic, with repetitive percussion and chords from the keyboard making up the basis of the accompaniment to Daniel's vocals. The song really does take you on a journey as the lyrics explain how money does not make up the foundation of a "real life," and how we often question the value of the things we own and the value they give to our life, social media's impact on our daily life, and how we as humans often fail to seek out a real and enjoyable life. I'm a sucker for lyrical themes that inspire you to think deeply and reevaluate how you see something, whether it be political, social, or any aspect of life (hence why I love Machine Head and Cattle Decapitation so much).

The somber and atmospheric musical textures in this single are really reminiscent of The War on Drugs, as the music really tunes out the world around you and allows you to take an introspective look on your life, or simply just emerge yourself in emotions that the percussion and keyboard alone bring to the surface of the song. This single really shows the progression in the band's career, as they begin to move away from the dark and heavy themes of their 2012 album entitled "Lunatic" and their seemingly electronic 2016 album release "Egomaniac." The future of the KONGOS looks extremely bright, especially if they can continue on the path laid out by "Real Life" in their inevitable release of a new album in the near future.
