FUCK YES! Soulfly’s “Ritual” (2018, death thrash) is one of the most technically and stylistically unique and refined metal albums of 2018. Honestly, I fell in love with “Ritual” “Dead Behind the Eyes” and “Evil Empowered”  as singles when they were released and they are undoubtedly the best songs on the album, but the realigning songs follow very close behind.

The riffs are so well crafted by Max and Marc that they’re literally ungodly. Not forgetting that the tone is just insanely huge and fat, the rhythmical elements mixed with different dynamics and technical attributes are insane like in “Evil Empowered” and “The Summoning.” Max’s son Zyon is fucking mad on the drums as he crafts a solid thrash-inspired style while still incorporating some aspects of death metal. I feel that due to the insane guitar work the bass gets lost a bit, but Mike is definitely there subtly bringing everything together. Lyrically Max really pulled it out of the bag this time. I think he went for a slightly less minimalistic style this time, writing more lines for each song than he normally does. The themes are also a lot more interesting for me as a lot of the songs take that political stance that Max is know for taking which is fucking awesome!

And yes, the suspenseful intros are just insane, especially in “Ritual” which is undoubtedly the best metal song of 2018. The chants are something that really makes the song stand out by itself as it’s something that just hasn’t really been done before in the way that Soulfly just did it. I’m a bit sad that the songs don’t lead into each other as well as they did on “Archangel” but that’s okay because the songs themselves are incredible. It took me a while to realize that “Dead Behind the Eyes” featured Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) on vocals because what stood out to more more was how much of a Gojira riffage meets Bloodbath vocals sound the song had especially in the intro of the song where Randy sings. Soulfly feels like the definition of metal, not a specific sub genre, but the metal genre as a whole. I mean they’re so diverse, and this albums proves just how diverse they can be. In this albums I’ve heard influences of classic death metal bands, hardcore bands, thrash bands, industrial bands, even classic metal bands like Motörhead, and psychedelic bands like Pink Floyd (“Soulfly XI”). Overall, the production quality (pre and post) is just beyond insane and this album deserves attention for that very reason.

It’s getting closer and closer to the end of the year, and there are several albums I have enjoyed that I’ve yet to review but I can tell you now that this album stands very tall in my top five metal albums of the year, if not at the very top.
