The Future of AC/DC

The Future of AC/DC

AC/DC is one of the most influential hard rock bands of all time. The band is and will forever be a powerhouse of heavy guitar riffs and anthemic songs for decades to come. Albums like “Back in Black” and “Highway to Hell” still prove to be some of hard rock’s all-time greats. Thousands of young kids were fuelled by AC/DC as well as the likes of Iron Maiden, Metallica, Van Halen and so on… But there’s a stark difference between 2018 AC/DC and 2018 Metallica and Iron Maiden. Both Metallica and Iron Maiden still maintain their core sound due to their line-up being unchanged for decades (except for Rob Trujillo). AC/DC suffered huge disadvantages these past few years with the loss of Phil Rudd (legal battles), Brian Johnson (hearing issues), Cliff Williams (retirement), and finally the death of Malcolm Young.

This is obviously an opinion article, but Cliff Williams even said before he retired from the band that he felt as though AC/DC was now “a changed animal.” Cliff is absolutely right, half of the band consists of new members who combined have less than ten years of experience playing with the band. Angus Young obviously still has the ability to carry on playing with the same energy as he did years ago, no matter how old he gets he still seems to be able to rock out on stage. Now as is the case with a lot of classic heavy metal and hard rock bands, the aforementioned kids who were lucky enough to grow up in this insanely awesome musical era stay true and loyal fans to their childhood bands when they become adults, ensuring bands like AC/DC will always have listeners. The current state of rock and roll is a heavily in-depth debate, so it’s easy to see how if you had grown up in the eras that sported these bands – you would not want to see these bands go. I also don’t want to see AC/DC go, and I only turned eighteen earlier this year. But we’ve reached the point with AC/DC where it’s not the real AC/DC, but a slither of the once amazing band now fronted by Axl Rose of Guns n’ Roses.

Putting myself into Angus’ shoes, I would be completely devastated at the loss of my drummer, singer, bassist, and the death of a brother with whom the band was founded. Angus has a connection with AC/DC that extends far beyond just being a musical output. The band was his family, he grew up playing music with them, recorded some of the most iconic albums ever with them, toured the world with them, and formed a bond for life with them.

I cannot hold an opinion on whether Angus should hang up the towel or not, and I would most definitely be interested in seeing see what Axl Rose singing on an AC/DC album would sound like. It’s sadly come to the point though were the band will most probably slowly fade away, with no imminent worldwide farewell tour to give the legacy of the band the correct emotional send-off that it deserves. However, sadly a farewell tour would not be complete without Brian, Cliff, Phil, and Malcolm playing onstage with Angus.

So, this was obviously written before the rumours broke of Angus and Phil being seen near the studio where they recorded their last few records, so let’s see if plans for an album release emerge or not…
